Whispers of the Ancients

A painting depicts a lush landscape with a large, leafy tree at the center. A small, white cat peeks out from a hollow log in the foreground, surrounded by tall green grass. In the background, there are ancient, weathered stone columns under a bright blue sky with wispy clouds.

I approach this contemporary painting with an eye for historical resonance and thematic depth. The piece before us presents a vivacious interplay of natural elements, with a central tree reminiscent of the ancient world’s reverence for nature’s majesty and sanctity. The olive tree’s robust trunk and sprawling branches suggest the vitality and enduring presence of the natural world, akin to the veneration of sacred groves in Hellenistic tradition.

Whispers of the Ancients

The feline figure, peering from over the Trojan helmet, serves as a modern echo of the mythological creatures that frequented Hellenistic art and lore, symbolizing the ever-present link between the known and the mystical.

The painting’s backdrop, with its classical column fragments, evokes the ruinous beauty of ancient sites, leading viewers into a meditation on the passage of time and the layered nature of history. The artist’s use of vibrant hues and textured brushstrokes lends the work an immediacy that contrasts with the eternal qualities of its Hellenistic references.

In sum, this painting is a thoughtful dialogue between past and present, offering a narrative that connects the viewer to the enduring legacy of the Hellenistic world. It is a homage not merely to a particular historical period but to the timeless essence of nature and mythology that has permeated art across ages.

Goddess of Ropes

The Goddess of Ropes painting vividly depicts a deity with long white hair and dark, expansive wings. Shimmering chains adorn her body as she stands against a swirling green and yellow backdrop, with two smaller bound figures displayed at the lower part of the image.

The painting titled “Goddess of Ropes” delves into the theme of Shibari, the Japanese art of rope bondage. The central figure is portrayed with an aura of power and mystique, aptly fitting for a goddess. The ropes are intricately woven around her, suggesting not just bondage but also a form of adornment, indicative of the complexity and aesthetic focus of Shibari.

The wings add a divine aspect, which contrasts with the earthly and physical connotation of ropes, creating a juxtaposition of freedom and restraint. This contrast is further emphasized by the vibrant, almost ethereal color palette used for the wings, against the more subdued tones of the ropes and the figure’s skin.

Goddess of Ropes

The artist’s brushwork in the background brings a sense of energy and movement, possibly symbolizing the flow of spiritual energy or the emotional rush associated with the practice of Shibari. The attention to detail, especially in the patterning of the ropes and the feathers of the wings, shows a dedication to the subject matter, while the overall composition maintains a balance between the figure and the surrounding elements, making the painting a rich exploration of its theme.

Turbulent Waters

A painting depicts a dark, three-masted ship navigating through turbulent waters under a cloudy, moonlit sky. The ship appears to be caught in a storm, with dynamic brushstrokes conveying the movement of the sea and the swirling clouds.

This was painted in November but I forgot to post it here. I brought in a third party to review it.

Review: “Turbulent Waters” is an evocative painting that captures the essence of a ship braving the untamed sea. The artist has skillfully used a spectrum of blues and purples to depict the ocean’s mood, which ranges from menacing to mesmerizing. The moon’s gentle glow adds a sense of calm to the otherwise dynamic scene, highlighting the dual nature of the sea as both a perilous force and a poetic inspiration.

Turbulent Waters

The stark contrast of the ship’s dark outline against the softer background not only draws the eye but also symbolizes the age-old confrontation between man and nature. The textured brushstrokes give life to the churning waves and the whispering wind, making the scene almost audible to the onlooker.

This painting would resonate with art lovers globally for its depiction of a universal human experience—navigating life’s challenges. It conveys a deep respect for the power of nature, paired with the human spirit’s determination to persevere. “Turbulent Waters” is a compelling piece that invites reflection on the journeys we all undertake, rendered with sincerity and a deft touch.

Celestial Kraken: An Odyssey Beneath Waves

A vibrant, abstract painting featuring a fantastical creature with elongated, pink feather-like appendages and intricate, swirling designs. The background is a mix of deep blues and purples, creating a cosmic atmosphere with floating bubbles and a glowing orb—truly resembling the "Celestial Kraken: An Odyssey Beneath Waves.

This piece is an enthralling amalgamation of aquatic mystery and celestial wonder, blending the organic with the cosmic. The artist has harnessed the vibrancy of the palette to evoke the dynamic movement and fluidity one might associate with the deep ocean, but with a twist that takes the viewer into the realm of the stars. The bold, crimson hues of the central figure, reminiscent of a galactic squid, demand attention, while the surrounding swirls suggest a dance of astronomical proportions.

The use of color and contrast is particularly noteworthy. The luminous tones of orange and red contrast with the deep blues and purples, creating a visual feast that is almost operatic in its drama. The painting invites the observer to consider the interconnectedness of all things – the macrocosm within the microcosm.

Celestial Kraken

The image presented here, though striking, simply cannot do justice to the original work’s luminescence and texture. The physical presence of the painting, with its layered applications and subtle interplay of light, offers an experience that is both visceral and ethereal. The viewer is reminded that this digital representation is but a shadow of the true vibrancy and depth that can only be fully appreciated in person. This artwork is not just to be seen; it’s to be experienced, lived with, and pondered over, promising new discoveries with each viewing.

Seasonal Symphony

An abstract painting titled "Seasonal Symphony" showcases a tree through the four seasons. The left side features vibrant green leaves (spring), the top displays red leaves (fall), the right has bare branches (winter), and the bottom right bursts with pink blossoms (summer). Swirling colors fill the background.

A custom piece for a client.

This painting presents an intriguing juxtaposition of seasons through the depiction of two distinct trees. The tree on the left is full of vibrant green foliage, symbolizing the lushness of spring or summer, while the tree on the right bursts with autumnal reds and oranges, representing the transition to fall. The use of thick, impasto brushstrokes adds a palpable texture to the canvas, giving the piece a dynamic and lively quality.

The swirling patterns in the background could be interpreted as the wind or a stylized representation of the sky, which adds a sense of movement to the scene. The artist has skillfully managed to balance the composition by contrasting the warm and cool colors, as well as the different textures, which guides the viewer’s eye across the canvas.

Overall, the piece could be seen as a metaphor for the cyclical nature of time and the ever-changing seasons, or it could simply be appreciated for its aesthetic beauty and the skillful application of paint. The artwork is vivid, inviting, and rich in both color and technique, likely to evoke emotional responses from its viewers.

I didn’t write most of that, I’m always interested in what others think of my work as if I lived 100 years in the past. AI is a useful tool in that regard. Although I never use AI in art, it has value in other realms.

Whispers of the Wild

The vibrant painting, Whispers of the Wild, showcases a serene landscape featuring a blue lake encircled by lush evergreen trees. The sky is filled with swirling clouds that add dynamic movement, while a branch adorned with green needles extends from the top left corner, perfectly framing the peaceful scene.
Whispers of the Wild

“Whispers of the Wild” is a captivating landscape painting that invites the viewer into a serene, yet spirited natural realm. The artist has skillfully harnessed the interplay of light and texture to create a living tapestry that feels both wild and intimate. At the forefront, meticulously detailed pine trees anchor the composition, their rich greens standing proud against the tranquil blues of the lake.

Above, the sky is an enchanting dance of color and motion, with bold strokes of white and blue swirling in a cosmic rhythm that breathes energy into the scene. The dynamism of the heavens contrasts with the stillness of the water below, which reflects the sky’s majesty in a quieter, more contemplative tone.

The light in this painting is a character of its own—ethereal and shifting, it graces the treetops and glimmers on the water’s surface with a delicate touch. The directionality of the light weaves through the foliage and reflects off the lake, infusing the landscape with a sense of morning’s first light breaking the embrace of dawn.

“Whispers of the Wild” stands as a testament to the beauty of the natural world, rendered with a passion that is palpable in every brushstroke. The artist’s choice to forgo the final refinement of lighting allows the piece to retain a raw, authentic energy that is both refreshing and invigorating. This work is not just a visual experience but an emotional journey, offering a glimpse into the untamed heart of nature.

Unique Feature

A unique feature of the work is that there are metallics used in the composition that give an added ‘glow’ effect to the light, as if the dawn is really there. The colors shimmer on the lake and hint of their presence in the trees and clouds.

Echoes of an Eldritch Moon

The product named "Echoes of an Eldritch Moon" is a surreal painting that depicts a giant red moon setting over a calm ocean, with several large, glowing turquoise tentacles emerging from the water. The sky is an otherworldly mix of dark purples and blues.

Today’s #artwork while vending at the Washington Midsummer Renaissance Faire. It’s basically a #kraken or other #cthulhu / #tentacle monster in the #harvest #moon. Be kind, it was 90 degrees and hot, I didn’t have shade for a lot of the #painting day. Asking $250. Will have prints at some point in the future.

Cthulhu in the Woods

A review by Johannes Van der Meer, writing for “De Kunst Kring,” an Amsterdam-based organization dedicated to the critique and appreciation of both classical and contemporary art forms. “De Kunst Kring” translates to “The Art Circle” in English, suggesting a community of art aficionados and critics engaged in thoughtful dialogue about the art world.

“Cthulhu in the Woods” presents a stirring confluence of horror and beauty. This painting captures the eldritch essence of H.P. Lovecraft’s iconic creation, Cthulhu, an entity symbolic of cosmic dread and the unknown.

The artist has masterfully utilized vibrant colors to contrast the terror-inducing figure with a backdrop that exudes a surreal, almost dreamlike quality. The use of warm tones in the sky and the cold hues of Cthulhu’s skin create a visual dichotomy, perhaps reflecting the clash between the natural world and the incomprehensible otherworldly.

The brushwork is vigorous, with visible strokes that add to the painting’s dynamic texture, suggesting a certain rawness and immediacy. The figure’s oversized portrayal dominates the canvas, a decision that underscores its mythical power and the futility of human resistance against such primordial forces.

While the work was initially intended to feature a Shoggoth, a shapeless conglomeration from the same mythos, as a mount, the resulting focus on Cthulhu’s immense form is, perhaps, a fortunate shift. It directs the viewer’s attention fully to the central figure, allowing for an unadulterated encounter with the embodiment of ancient and unspeakable horror.

This painting would resonate with enthusiasts of Lovecraftian horror, as well as those who appreciate art that pushes boundaries and evokes a strong emotional response. It stands as a testament to the power of myth and the enduring appeal of Lovecraft’s universe, and it would surely be a conversation piece in any collection, beckoning viewers to contemplate the mysteries that lie beyond the veil of human understanding.

Seymour

A close-up painting of Seymour, the sea turtle from the product line "Seymour," shows him swimming gracefully underwater. Seymour's content expression is highlighted by his large, expressive eyes and meticulously detailed scales on his flippers and head. The background features a vibrant blue, enhancing the sense of depth and creating an engaging oceanic environment.

I painted this at the Fernandina Beach Shrimp Festival while dressed as the Pink Pantser (a pirate wearing pink for breast cancer awareness). It’s my first acrylic / canvas painting in a long time.

San Fernandina, FL,

“Seymour,” an intriguing work of art, captures the playful essence of sea life through the eyes of a seasoned naturalist and art critic. I find this painting to be a delightful confluence of accurate biological representation and whimsical artistic interpretation.

The artist has skillfully employed a palette that resonates with the vibrant hues of the ocean, lending the work an almost tangible quality of life beneath the waves. The choice of colors is both true to the natural appearance of the sea turtle and enhanced for artistic effect, creating a compelling visual narrative. The turtle’s gaze is rendered with a gentle anthropomorphism that invites viewers to consider the creature’s perspective, a subtle nudge towards empathy for marine life.

The composition, while simple, is effective in its focus on the turtle’s face, drawing attention to the details in the eyes and the patterns on the shell. These elements are depicted with a degree of stylization that does not detract from the overall naturalistic approach but adds a touch of charm and character to the subject.

“Seymour” thus stands at the crossroads of art and science, a testament to the power of painting to both represent and interpret the natural world. It’s an exemplary piece that showcases the artist’s ability to communicate the wonder of marine creatures while also engaging an audience in the broader conversation about ocean conservation.
