Ghost in the Well

A surreal painting shows a lone figure meditating beneath an abstract, twisted tree. The landscape features red, swirling shapes resembling eyes, leading to a staircase that ascends to a cliff where the whispered legend of the Ghost in the Well beckons. The sky is a deep blue, creating a mystical atmosphere.

This piece was initially the result of a dream. I went through many versions in my head before I settled on something I could actually execute on canvas. The overall tone comes from my subconscious, of course – that sense of helplessness in a world bigger than you. The subject is a girl trapped in a well, the moonlight streaming down to comfort her in her prison. She’s not seen another soul for decades, yet still wonders if someone will come to her rescue. Humanity, it seems, has passed the girl by, yet Nature, in a moment of tenderness has forged a place for her in the natural order.

Squareset

Squareset is an abstract representation of a sunset using strictly horizontal strokes (kind of a thing I’m developing). This is mostly a test set for color, but I think it stands on it’s own. Eater of Worlds

This painting is about #depression. I could waste words trying to be eloquent about it but depression is a soul-killing illness that people joke about but don’t really understand or think is a real illness (as recently observed at work). The flowering trees represent the beauty of the world, the ladies on promenade humanity, and the force in the background? Churchill’s ‘black dog’, that force which is the destroyer of worlds.

I was inspired by Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream,’ although I did not borrow from this great artist per se. What more is there? This is an #acrylic #painting on canvas. 18 x 24. Available.

In other news, I’ve planned it out, I should have a studio by December 2018. I’m working for the man to pay off my divorce debt, so that is why it will take a minute to get set up. All my fans will be invited to stop in and share a glass of wine. However, I won’t know you’re a fan unless you say something 😉

Postscript: Apparently a major social media company isn’t impressed with art or maybe is anti-depression. Regardless, my promotion was canceled. They (the company) would not say exactly why, save that it didn’t meet with their guidelines.

This is the first post since I’ve been doing this that has been rejected. So if someone complained that it wasn’t happy enough, thank you! Depression is a serious topic. Maybe my art is nouveau-degenerate, but then again, art is supposed to make a statement.

Flight of the Raven

A vibrant painting depicts a large, luminous moon surrounded by colorful clouds against a pink and orange sky. In the foreground, a dark blue bird with bright, reflective eyes appears to gaze toward the moon, an enchanting moment in the Flight of the Raven, framed by abstract, swirling shapes and colors.

My first finger-painting since the third grade. I’ve always wondered how effective it would be. The answer? For a guy with big fingers, I can’t get any detail. I’m going back to brushes for the next one, but it was fun to ‘roll around in the mud’, if you will, and stretch my wings.

As I’ve said, no brush touched this canvas. It looks like it, right? The story, a raven soars in the evening sky, trees below and a gibbous moon riding high in the sky, illuminating it’s coat as it searches for a throne upon which to perch… or something like that.

Acrylic finger-painting on canvas (good thing its not the Middle Ages, where this stuff was not cheap). Comments welcome, I have mostly thick-skin 🙂

Eye of Heaven

If you ever look at a human eye up close, it’s one of the most beautiful natural creations. I was thinking of this when I started this project. At the same time, I wanted to create the impression of what one would see looking up at the moon. The moon here represents the reflection of natural light in the eyes, where the forest is the myriad of colors that make up the rest. It’s also a reflection on life, eternity, and the wonder of natural things.

Mixed Media (really because of the pumice I used to make the moon (it’s somewhat 3-D) on canvas, 11 x 14, and already sold.

Berries

“Berries”, a fluff piece really; designed to get me painting again. I’d lost the Muse for a moment, so I just went with what I felt. This is a combination of acrylics, extremely watered down to look like… errr, watercolors. I then used some spray painting (nice fumes on that one) with stencils and these odd polystyrene balls I found at Michael’s. To finish it off, I used fingers to paint what the balls could not. I’m hoping the brilliance of the reds hold when the paints dry. This is 18×24 and is multimedia.

Harvest Knights

“Harvest Knights” Acrylic and Spray Paint on Canvas, 18 x 24. Deep in the night, under the blood moon a pair of knights rush along a deserted road, past ruins of long forgotten folk towards an urgent engagement. At least that’s the idea. The skills never match the concept.

Flanders Fields Forever

Flanders Fields Forever. This piece commemorates the lives lost in the great European wars, and Europe’s eventual turn to unity. It is also a rebuke of this century’s tempest, where those twisted souls who would shed blood in the name of God, no matter by what name he is called, are rebuked and their bloodshed turned to timeless poppies.

The work is 16 x 20, Acrylic on canvas. I used a variety of transfer media, from brushes, templates, to power tools, to kitchen tools, and gravity herself in order to achieve the effect.

Firefly

A colorful mixed media artwork featuring a large painted tree with square panels integrated into it. Each panel has illuminated cut-out designs, including a cluster of grapes, a leaf arrangement, and a tree. One panel includes glowing lights resembling fireflies dancing over a moss texture.

Firefly is a 36″ x 48″ 3D sculpture / painting utilizing acrylic paint, multiple canvases, mirrors, LED lighting (Solar or electrical power) tissue wrap paper, model railroad foliage (branches) and fake grass. Evocative of a Midsummer Night, this piece draws on unconventional landscape effects to bring the composition to life. This is for sale. I’m asking $999.00. It may seem like a lot, but it allows me to eat and create art in an expensive area.

Firefly

First Contact

I experimented with #airbrush in the beginning, but don’t have the special #paint (more finely ground than standard acrylics), and so I went back to the brush. It’s a sign I need a rich patron. I Have Been Busy

Greetings and ‘Happy 2016’; although it’s almost March. I apologize for not keeping up the website as diligently as I have social media (facebook.com/robscanvas). However, I have spent the morning updating, re-categorizing pages, adding art, and other web-mastery things. I believe I have all of the kinks out, but don’t quote me on that.
