Once More Unto The Doodle

I’m driven in art by the notion that today may be my last day on this rock orbiting a small G2V star on the lesser known side of the Milky Way; which is why I try to do something every day. Good, bad, whatever, it’s a record i existed. So, here are some butterflies flitting about in a nameless summer field on a warm summer day.

Fear not, those that are here for my digital art (of the 3D kind. I haven’t abandoned it, I’m just waiting for a cool idea to pop up.

So this is digital, but it’s oil, spray paint, stencil and some watercolor – ergo mixed media.

The Quiet Hours

I didn’t want today to go by without doing a doodle, so here you go. Technically mixed media in layers. Acrylic, water color, stencils, and a dash of magic. Better viewed on a bigger monitor, I can barely see the trees on my phone. But then, it’s a doodle, there’s more room for imperfections.

Unleashed

I didn’t want to let the first day of a new year go by without creating some artwork, so here you go. It was originally named ‘Flight’, but I used that yesterday. So I solved the conundrum and changed the name to the song I had on repeat while I was creating it; because one should credit where one draws inspiration, and it’s as much a part of the total package for me.

Now, for legal reasons and all, these two things are not associated, nor am I riding coat-tails. I’m merely sharing what inspired me. The song is ‘Unleashed’ by Two Steps from Hell (one of my favorite groups). The composer is Thomas Bergersen, and Merethe Soltvedt provides the vocalization. I visualize the birds taking off at 2:50, or here:

The Haunting of a Tree

This is four digital art paintings in one. It represents the things a tree would see over a lifetime. It got messy putting them together, but art is messy when trying new things. I may turn it into a gif.

The layers I used are each represented below in order. Layer 1 is infancy and youth.

Layer two is love and hope.

Layer three is strife and conflict.

Layer four is denouement and loss. The ghosts become real.

I suppose it could be a snapshot of any century, but I relate it to the post-9/11 world.

Reflections

This was a doodle. I didn’t particularly have any goal in mind besides playing with lights off reflective surfaces, ye old, reflection in a reflection. It feeds into my love of light; and it turned out cool, so, I’m happy. Otherwise, tomorrow is another day in the work (to feed my body), art (to feed my soul), and sleep (to feed my mind), then repeat, routine.

Disinclination

Znamya had no interest in getting involved in the partisan wars raging through the once peaceful land. Traveller after traveller came and went, unable to convince the giant to intercede in the affairs of of the little people. He had retreated to the outer lands as reactionaries spilled into public squares, each accusing the other side of being the worst form of evil, while failing to see their own reflection in their poisonous words. It was not his place to make them see past their respective fishbowls, so, as ballots turned to ballistae he was content looking at the sky and telling each and every one exactly where they could take their politics.

The Earth Mother

I channeled #caspardavidfriedrich to create this #bodyscape #artwork – it’s not my original concept, which was lost in a crash. It was #magical – Anywho, move on they say. Bodyscapes don’t require many assets but they put a huge load on the cpu and memory, especially with older rigs like mine. The #creation took longer due to the #tree on the left. The whole concept was to capture #paintings of the #romantic movement in #art – #digitalart #landscape

The Ruin

“Kle’itu led the #offworlder to what loosely translated in her language as ‘the #ruin of man’, or, as the strangers had mistranslated, ‘wealth of the people.’ Far out in the #desert it lay, where the mother-ground bleached herself before the twin suns. It was a ritual for the seed-carriers to survive the ancient #temple – and doing so would earn them a place in Ginosean society. Why the offworlder was so interested, Kle’itu did not know.”

I saw something interesting yesterday that fed into #art I’ve been doing for a while, called #bodyscape #artwork – a form of #fantasyart which I decided to combine with #scifi

I actually finished it last night but it was late, so I rendered it this morning.

Let’s Talk Commissions

I do commission work. If you’ve got something in mind, need something big, different from my norm, etc., I will take on the job.

You’ll notice that my art generally is in the 16×20 or 18×24 range.  This is due to storage issues. I’ve done two bigger works, each at 30-something by forty-something (below), and have had to store them on my walls since there’s only so much space for keeping these paintings dry and temperature controlled.

This isn’t to say I wouldn’t mind painting bigger canvases, but until I get my studio set up, slated for February 2018, I can only take commissions for bigger work.

So yeah, big canvases are not a problem. I use a formula to calculate the price, basically a base of the canvas size times hours invested, plus materials and the dreaded beast – shipping. 

If you are interested in having something painted, by all means contact me. If you have a reference picture that would be super-awesome. We can set up a conference call to discuss the work desired.

Note, my Achilles heel is doing realistic paintings of people. Animals? No problem. Concept or abstract art? Also, no problem. I will do portraits but can’t guarantee they will be spot on. Let’s go to the studio for a reference (below):


Now, granted this was painted two years ago when I was just starting (hopefully I’ve gotten better), but there are things I would do better/different now. Luckily, payment sort of fell through (they broke up), so I don’t feel bad about the work.

So actual portraits are a roll of the dice, enhanced portraits (kind of like Hollywood – based on actual people / events) are doable. Landscapes, flowers, animals, or abstract? The sky is the limit.

Aurora

A vibrant painting depicts a night sky filled with green and white splashes resembling stars, nebulas, and hints of an aurora. Below, a forest of leafless trees is rendered in dark red hues, creating a striking contrast against the illuminated, cosmic background.

Like most of my paintings, this one started off in another direction. I tend to go where my artistic Muse takes me, so planning is the first thing out the window. 

I started playing around on the canvas and eventually ended up with this. The scene in the painting is ostensibly a forest under the night sky, in abstract form, of course.  I named it ‘Aurora’ because it reminded me of a bucket list item, seeing the Aurora Borealis. 


A variety of techniques went into the creation of the artwork. I assume they have proper names in the art world, but I used a combination of wet canvas / color bleed, spatter (as the result of playing air-drummer while my favorite music was on), and using black gesso to fill in the branches.

Overall, I’m going with a win for the rescue of the painting. 18×24, acrylic on canvas, April 30, 2017.
